What Is Chrome Diopside?
Chrome diopside is a chromium-rich variety of the mineral diopside, and it’s chromium that gives the stone its rich, vivid green colour - the same element responsible for emerald’s colour, which is exactly why chrome diopside has earned the nickname “Siberian Emerald.”
The comparison is fitting for another reason too: almost all gem-quality chrome diopside comes from a single deposit in the Inagli region of Eastern Siberia, in the far north of Russia. Gem-quality material only became commercially available in the late 1980s, which makes it a relative newcomer compared to stones that have been worked for centuries - part of what makes it feel distinctive rather than mass-market.
Why Choose Chrome Diopside Over Emerald?
Emerald is famously expensive and famously included - most emeralds you’ll see have visible inclusions even to the naked eye, and the stone is notoriously prone to chipping.
Chrome diopside offers a genuinely different trade-off:
• The colour is comparably rich without the price tag of even a modest emerald
• It’s typically cleaner - eye-visible inclusions are less common than in emerald
• It’s a real, natural stone - not a synthetic or simulated substitute, just a different (and rarer, in terms of global supply) mineral
It’s worth being upfront about one thing: chrome diopside is a genuinely different gemstone, not “fake emerald.” If the deep green colour is what you love, it delivers that in its own right.
How Durable Is It?
Chrome diopside sits at roughly 5.5–6 on the Mohs hardness scale, which makes it softer than stones like sapphire or amethyst. It’s entirely wearable in pendants, earrings, and occasional-wear rings, but it does need a bit more care than harder gemstones - something we always flag when customers ask us about it.
Caring for Your Chrome Diopside Jewellery
A few habits will keep it looking its best for years:
1. Remove it before anything physical. Sport, gardening, housework - anything with a risk of knocks - is worth taking the piece off for.
2. Skip the ultrasonic cleaner. Chrome diopside doesn’t respond well to ultrasonic or steam cleaning; stick to gentle hand cleaning instead.
3. Clean with warm water and mild soap. A soft brush is enough to lift dust from around the setting - avoid anything abrasive.
4. Store it separately. Keep it away from harder gemstones in your jewellery box so it doesn’t pick up surface scratches.
